Had a discussion with a scrum master recently who had misunderstood slices. His team had a deliverable/epic which was estimated at 3 sprints. They’d come up with 3 slices. So you would anticipate 1 slice per sprint.
Wrong.
Turned out the slices weren’t vertical – I’m not sure they were even horizontal.
Think of delivering slices of value in terms of this rainbow cake pictured. At the earliest possible opportunity you want to deliver the thinnest possible slice of the complete cake.
Nobody just wants a layer of the red velvet stuff. How are you going to add the other colours? You’d have to bake the red layer first. Would you add the cream to the red layer before serving? How much longer would it take to make the complete cake?
